“Look at the amount of people who visit the Panhandle who are from the Central time zone. “But in practice I think it would be detrimental,” he said. Trumbull said in theory having one time zone in all of Florida might sound like a good idea. If it came down to me voting on a bill that moves us to Eastern time, I’d be opposed.” “It does nothing to move the Panhandle to Eastern time. “The House version of this only moves the entire state to daylight saving time,” Trumbull said. Trumbull also said he he supports the House but not the Senate version of the bill. “Most of my constituents like (daylight saving time)," Drake said. Jay Trumbull, R-Panama City, and Brad Drake, R-DeFuniak Springs, share the chamber’s view opposing the time zone change but supporting year-round daylight saving time. “People who work until 5 or so, currently when we leave work its almost dark,” she said. Roberts said that’s a positive for everyone, not only businesses but people who want to get outside and do activities after they get off work. “Now it goes to the executive committee that supports just going to daylight saving time and opposing going to Eastern time.”ĭaylight saving time on a year-round basis would mean daylight lasting longer in the fall and winter months. “We’re putting final touches on our position paper today,” Roberts said Wednesday. She said eight other chambers in the Panhandle have expressed their opposition to changing to Eastern time. She said the shift would be a negative for commerce as well as people who might live in one state and work in another. Carol Roberts, the president of the Bay County Chamber of Commerce, pointed out that if the Senate bill passes, there would at times be a two-hour time difference between Bay County and those counties to the north in Alabama - one hour for the elimination of daylight saving time and one for the move to Eastern time zone.
